Finding Meaning in Service Workshop

Purpose:

We have limited time in our daily lives to budget for service work. Do you:

  • Wonder why you volunteer? Or, why are volunteer requirements sometimes imposed by schools?

  • Know that volunteering can refresh your spirit and need for connection -- particularly right now?

  • Want practical advice for how to find and select volunteering opportunities?

  • Worry that you say yes to the first service opportunity that comes your way, whether or not it’s right for you?

  • Want to look for more meaningful volunteering opportunities to shape your life and your thinking about who you are?

In this two-session forum, we’ll discuss these and other questions  (each part will be one hour).  See “What we’ll do in each session” below. We encourage you to attend both sessions.  Fridays are intended for high school students and  Sundays are intended for college students and young adults. If that doesn’t work for you, feel free to sign up for the day associated with the other group.

Dates & Times:

Option 1 - (Primarily for High School Students): TBD

Option 2 (Primarily for College Students & Young Adults): TBD

What we’ll do in each Session:

Session 1: We’ll share stories about why we volunteer, how life and career paths can be affected by volunteering, and how we gain meaning from it. Also, what it can do for your spirit and need for connection -- particularly right now. We’ll ask for “twinning” volunteers in Session 1, to be paired off as teams to pick a service activity (short, or more involved, as each team wishes) to do together after Session 2.

Session 2: We’ll discuss resources for picking volunteering opportunities and how to pick the right opportunities. The twinning teams will also present their ideas, and we’ll outline tips for developing individual service action plans. Finally, we’ll pick, as a group, a micro-loan recipient. See kiva.org.
